Dinner with a hyperactive monkey and Ho Choon Hiong, the director of Moving Gods, a short film that spins a modern morality tale around an old shrine dedicated to a deceased German girl. I found the punchline a tad contrived, but can forgive Choon Hiong's desire to insert a deus ex chelonia to remind viewers not to take myths (or the gods) too seriously.
On screen, Pulau Ubin comes alive as an abode of benevolent spirits and swaying regiments of coconut palms, a refuge from the banal materialism of the economic mainland. The island's guardians come across as microcosms of the human dilemma, revealing in their choices the cruel ability to be both better and worse than they appear. As we await the neon lights of integrated resorts, will our late Datuk continue to live in the minds of men as a blonde bestower of fortune or lamentable lady of ill-luck?
