There's no place like home, especially when the neighbours are nice and there are no unsightly developments to mar the class of a suburban retreat. It's so much better to spare unwelcome guests the ignomity of scorn and usher them to safe havens that will not offend the sensibilities of a fragile community.
Here, by a quiet stretch of Tanah Merah Coast Road, between the ferry terminal and a naval base, and nestled amid unkempt scrubland and biting sandflies, the men who built and are still building this city enjoy a rare view and rarified facilities to rest and recover from hours of anonymous labour. There's no place like home, especially when it's far from the minds of a maddened crowd and a refuge for nameless men who serve a country of migrants and toil for the sake of a people who neither know their needs nor trouble themselves with any need to know.
