I seem to recall Island Creamery way back from JC days, when Serene Centre was overrun by guys in grey (their female counterparts, however, could be seen a mile away in their PE kit thanks to the blazing red shorts) and blokes in boring brown from the two closest institutions of semi-higher learning. An unfortunate turn of events (don't ask or I'll unleash the monkey on you) found me making a pitstop there yesterday, and the place reveals relatively little change over the years.
MacDonald's still dominates the rear, along with the video rental outlet. Black Canyon, a Thai steak and coffee chain, had a branch there for a little while, but the spot is now shared between another cafe and a foot reflexology outfit. Upstairs, the Comics Mart is holding up well, along with Tierney's Gourmet.
Deciding that a little indulgence would cheer my duck up, I decided to make a treat of Island Creamery's famed nutella ice cream. This joint has acquired not a little fame islandwide for its fresh homemade, all natural frozen emulsions of milk, cream, egg, sugar and everything nice. It seems the lusciousness extends to the staff; the girl serving me the cone was bright-eyed and perky with a smile-enforced dimple, and donned a slip of a sundress that started well below her neckline. Fortunately, the only dripping that people saw was that of the ice cream melting down my fevered fingers....
