Erstwhile pet of wicked little animals, Rye is a spotted house gecko who endured a week or two of curious captivity before tasting freedom anew. Despite the name, this lizard is hardly found inside urban homes, where bleached walls favour the survival of less mottled wallcrawlers. Still a Jüngling at 10 cm, Rye hitched a brief ride on my duck before attempting a getaway by leaping onto my pants. Luckily my duck wasn't wearing a button fly that day or she'd had wormed her way into inextricably dark and hairy regions. Back in her terrarium, Rye recovered her senses under a twig, gobbling up cockroaches and crickets and growing just enough to moult and leave behind a thin trace of her existence in dry skin.
